Have you left your Christmas shopping a bit late this year? If so and you have book-loving friends and family, then allow me to share with you a few festive ideas for last-minute presents. Some are ones to buy, others are fairly quick makes if you are a handicrafts person.

Most booklovers appreciate a pretty bookmark and if it's handmade, all the better! I made these for my son's teachers last year, along with a pencil case (they'd been studying Harry Potter all term). They are incredibly simple to make and often inexpensive to buy, but they are always appreciated.

While you may not know their taste in books, you know they like reading, right? You could get them a voucher for your local indie bookshop, or if you don't have one, for a chain bookstore, or the 'zon. Most readers I know could spend their vouchers ten times over, so they're always a good choice. Plus, as they are available on Christmas Eve, if you've really left it this late, you still have time to grab one!

Most readers have a few special books - ones they want to read, but don't want to get damaged. These book pouches are a fabulous idea - you can make them in different sizes depending on the kinds of books people read and because they are padded, they protect books nicely when they're being knocked around in a bag.

A book subscription is an excellent present for someone who has got into a bit of a rut with their reading. Most let you curate your choice of books - either by genre of a category like 'bestsellers'. Whichever way you choose to do it, it's a gift which is sure to be appreciated.

My mum doesn't like me spending lots of money on her at Christmas, but I like buying her presents, so we've come up with a compromise that suits us both. Every year, I choose her 12 books from the charity shop and wrap them in brown paper with the month written on. I try to get a mix of books I know she will enjoy and ones I think might challenge her in some way. I also make her a new shopping bag to put the books in, so she also gets to see how much my sewing skills have improved!

Lots of readers like to keep track of their reading. Some do it online, others note it in a book. Why not gift a book journal - there are all kinds of different ones available, some with more detail and space for reviews, others which just allow you to list the books you read. Pair it with a pretty pen and you're onto a winner.

Last year, every child in my family got a book cushion. For the older ones, it was a bid to encourage them to keep their books and snacks tidily, rather than leaving them strewn all over my living room. When you're a family of five and four of you read copiously with snacks and cups of tea on the go, the house can begin to resemble a bomb site! This was one I did for my nephew, but we obviously filled it with children's books and snacks. This photo was just a sample I did to send to my sewing group to show how it could be used.
