An ancient king,
educated, well-read, cultured.
Ruthless.
Freedom fighter or terrorist?
Feminist hero or suppressor of the working classes?
Which side of the glass do we look through
to see a true reflection?
Or does the truth lie somewhere
in the place between?
That liminal space where everything
and nothing
collide.
The best.
The worst.
Two sides of the same face.
Where past and present blur
the lines of reality.
Rough edges smoothed
erased.
Achievements stolen, underplayed
forgotten.
Can we ever find the truth
even of ourselves?
Father, brother, friend
Sister, mother, daughter
A hundred facets face the world
but which of them is real?
Names on a page,
descriptions in a book,
actions recorded but what motive?
Revenge or good judgement,
for people or profit,
posterity or glory?
And in the museums,
the survivors fix their stony gaze
as onlookers ponder
what wonders they have seen.
What bloodshed?
If they could speak,
would they brag of fame and fortune
or whisper quietly
about the insignificance
of humanity?
For what is one short human life
compared
to theirs?
