It had been a blisteringly sunny day and the children had spent it dashing between beach and sea, squealing as cold waves crashed against hot legs. Balls had been kicked and caught and books read. Across the area where towels had lain, toys were now strewn, abandoned and forgotten as bags were packed in readiness for the return to the cooler climes of home. Shouts of laughter were interspersed with urges to hurry up and the sharp tang of salt and vinegar hung in the air alongside the seaside of fish and chips. Another scent underpinned it all: family contentment.
