December Picture Prompt: Driving Home From Christmas

Lights twinkle

red, blue, green

dazzling in the dark

Cornwall has its ‘Welcome Home’ trees,

ours less well known

but just as welcome a sight

Not long moved

back ‘home’ to see family,

dark night, pouring rain

sad to leave

displaced,

not quite belonging.

Out of the gloom they emerge

in all their seasonal brilliance

the guardians on the hill

watching over our slumbering town;

one in the valley,

one on the crest

and without warning, the feeling of belonging,

open arms

welcoming us home.
