Life can be cosy,

safe,

if you learn to camouflage yourself,

in the trees.

Hide your views,

be a good girl and don’t cause trouble.

But there’s always the friend

who says no,

be loud,

be proud,

be strong.

Don’t turn away with an awkward smile,

stand your ground and fight

because you have a choice;

you can walk away,

blend in.

Not everyone can.

When things are wrong, make a fuss,

be a voice for those who cannot speak,

right the wrongs,

even if you are only one.

For one can make a difference.

The friend is your one,

the one who brings courage,

support,

makes you more than you are.

They remind you who you once wanted to be:

a leader,

a change-maker.

They know your history,

your beliefs,

your values,

your actions,

and you want to live up to

their vision of you

because even if you fail

at least they will remember you tried

because nothing is ever forgotten.
